Tonnellerie Maury - Supplier Spotlight
Maury represents a fourth-generation left bank Bordeaux cooperage that originated along the "quai des chartrons" quartier of Bordeaux in 1893. Today, the cooperage is managed by third generation Mathieu Maury who oversees the production of 4,000 French oak barrels a year.
Château Haut-Marbuzet
The 64-hectare estate is located in Bordeaux's Médoc region, specifically in the AOC of Saint-Estèphe, and its neighbors include Châteaux Cos d'Estournel and Châteaux Montrose. Châteaux owner Hervé Duboscq, who was joined by his son Henri Duboscq in 1962, increased the quality and image of the estate both locally and Internationally. Today, Haut-Marbuzet is considered a benchmark of quality and prestige in the Saint-Estèphe region and the Châteaux has been partnered with Tonnellerie Maury for over two generations since 1956.
Bordeaux left bank
The Chateaux's first wine, Haut-Marbuzet, consists of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, and 10% Cabernet Franc. The vineyards are planted at high density (9,000 vines per hectare) on Günzian gravel topsoil with a clay-limestone subsoil. Stylistically, the wine is known to be powerful with soft juicy tannins, spicy exotic aromatics, and the potential to age for over 30 years.
Winemaking
Post inoculation, primary fermentation of the Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc takes place separately in custom concrete tanks made by Italian manufacturer CLC Vasche. Malolactic fermentation then takes place separately in 100% new French Oak Bordeaux Export Thin Stave barrels followed by an élevage of 18 months. The wine is racked once and the Bordeaux thin stave barrels allow for faster micro-oxidation.
Why MAURY, Medium Toast Barrels
Maury, Center of France, Two-year Air Dry, Medium Toast barrels represent 60% of annual barrel purchases, with Taransaud making up the rest. Only in 2018 was Medium Toast completely replaced with Medium + Toast to balance substantial vintage variation. Medium + was used to balance a more powerful vintage profile and concentrated berries.
Maury's MC2 (double light long toast) toast continues to grow in popularity. However, it is Maury's Medium Toast that is most popular with Maury's French clientele and represents a perfect equilibrium between elegance, slightly toasted almond aromatics, and velvety tannins while maintaining structure and length on the palate.
